Technical integrity checks
Verify no clipping, clicks, abrupt edits, or unintended silence in the print. Confirm sample rate, bit depth, and export naming consistency. Play 0:00, the first downbeat, a mid-song edit, and the last tail. A lot of “bad masters” are bad mix bounces with a tick at the top.
Look at the file, not only the session, because offline bounces can differ, so listen in another app. If the WAV is 16-bit by accident, or 22 kHz, stop and do not master a bad container.
Fades should be intentional. A chopped delay at 3:12 is not a mastering job.
Musical balance checks
Listen for vocal clarity, low-end control, and section contrast. If chorus impact relies only on loudness, revisit arrangement and dynamics. A verse and chorus that are the same density will not be saved by a limiter.
Kick versus bass still need jobs. If they are a blob, mastering EQ will blob them louder.
If the vocal is 2 dB down, remix. Write it on the QC sheet so you do not “just master it.”
Translation checks
Test on at least three playback contexts including a limited small-speaker device. Take notes quickly, then apply targeted revisions. Earbuds, phone speaker, and whatever you mixed on is a valid trio. Add a car if you can.
Low volume is a check, not an insult to your mix. If the song dies, mids are missing or the vocal is down.
Mono the hook. If it vanishes, fix width before mastering width.
Reference comparison
Match loudness with references before judging tonal differences. A fair comparison prevents over-brightening or over-limiting mistakes. If your mix is quieter and you “EQ to catch up,” you are just turning it up with treble.
Compare kick-to-vocal, snare height, and harshness, not the reference’s video budget or their guest feature. You are stealing translation, not their marketing.
If you cannot name three differences, you are not ready to master. You are ready to keep mixing or to stop.
Pre-master QC workflow
Do this on a printed bounce, not by memory of last night’s session. Ears lie. Files do not if you play them.
A short walk between mix and QC is worth more than another 0.2 dB of 8 kHz. Fresh ears catch the click at 0:00 that tired ears mixed around.
- Bounce mix WAV with headroom; name it mix_vXX.
- Listen to start, middle, end in another player.
- Phone, earbuds, mono, low volume.
- Write fails only; fix those in the mix.
- Reference A/B at matched loudness.
- If fails are gone, master. If vocal is still down, do not master.

Gate: if technical integrity fails, stop. If lyrics fail on a phone, stop. Mastering is not the next step. Mixing is.
Passing this list is how you avoid paying for a master of a mistake. Fail a line, fix the mix print, then master the file that earned it.

FAQ
Should I master immediately after mixing?
A short break improves objectivity and catches hidden issues. Even 20 minutes helps; If you have been boosting treble for hours, sleep; Morning QC is a free engineer.
What if only one device sounds bad?
Decide based on priority audience devices and severity. If phones are the audience and phones fail lyrics, you fix it; If one exotic hi-fi is dark, you may ignore it; Do not ignore earbuds plus phone together.
Is clipping ever acceptable pre-master?
Avoid accidental clipping. Intentional clipping should be deliberate, controlled, and already the sound of the mix; Accidental overs in a bounce are a reprint, not a mastering texture.
How do I document revisions?
Use versioned exports with concise notes on each change set, like mix_v07_vocal_up.wav. Future you and any mastering path, human or AI, needs that trail.
How long should pre-master QC take?
Fifteen to thirty minutes for a single if you are disciplined. Longer if you keep mixing during QC; QC is a gate; If you open plugins for a new idea, you left QC and went back to mixing; That is allowed, but rename the stage honestly.
Do I need a metering plugin to QC?
